The Diwa Ng Kalayaan (Spirit of Independence) and the Ginoo Ng Kalayaan (Gentleman of Freedom) is a competition conducted among Dalagang Filipina (single Filipino girls) and Ginoong Filipino 16-25 years of age. The Search is being conducted as an integral part of the annual commemoration of the Declaration of Philippine Independence. More importantly, the contest aims to develop, instill and nurture a greater appreciation among the Filipino-American youth of their heritage, culture and the history of their ancestral country. The coronation pageant and gala aims to ensure wider participation of contestants, receive greater support from families, friends and the community. The Diwa Ng Kalayaan/Ginoo Ng Kalayaan gets to be the PIDCI Ambassador of goodwill. Both Diwa Ng Kalayaan and Ginoo ng Kalayaan together with their respective courts also get the opportunity to ride on a festive float during the Philippine Independence Day Parade on Madison Avenue (the largest parade of its kind outside the Philippines) on the first Sunday in June. They are also asked to participate and volunteer during PIDCI events and activities.
